Common Steps on How to Look For a Reputable DUI Lawyer for Your DUI Legal Case

When arrested for a DUI charge, there are two things that you can do. One, you can get a reputable DUI Lawyer to represent you or two, you can represent yourself. The second one is not a good option, unless you are a skilled DUI lawyer, arrested on a DUI charge. In some states, being arrested for a DUI means that you could go to jail for up to 48 hours and you could have your driving license revoked. Your vehicle, would have been impounded and everyday that you spend in jail would mean additional charges that you would have to pay for your car at the impound lot. If losing your license and mode of transportation is not something you’d like happen to you, then you should look for an experienced lawyer to represent your case.

You can start by:

1. Searching through the yellow pages: this is a good place to start as most lawyers would advertise their firms here, so you would have a few options to choose from. Choose at least 3 to 5 firms and later you can choose which you would like to work with.

2. Go on the internet: Search engines such as Google, Yahoo! and MSN can assist you in your search as well. All you need to do is input the type of lawyer and the location you are in to get the results. It is as easy as that! You could also search for online blogs, or chat rooms where people discuss about their lawyers and get a general opinion of who would be the best to hire.

3. Ask family & friends: Find out from family members and friends if anyone has been in this position before. Do they have a lawyer that they were happy with? What was the outcome of their case? Would they recommend the lawyer to you? These are a few things that you should ask in determining the best lawyer for you.

4. Ask your local law enforcement department: Normally they too would know who can assist you. They would have contacts in this department as they would have to recommend lawyers to those who are in the same position as you are. They might also tell you to get a court appointed lawyer if you cannot afford one on your own, but this might not be a good idea. Court appointed lawyers are most often those fresh out of law school without any experience. If you are serious about getting your charges dropped, you need someone with experience.

Just because the firm has a big flashy ad on TV or on a huge billboard somewhere, it does not mean that they are the best and that you should appoint them as your lawyer. Choosing a lawyer depends on you and your ability to trust and work with this person. Experienced and skilled lawyers would be expensive, but they are your best chance in getting your sentence reduced or getting the charges dropped altogether.
